Increasing Bicycle Safety in the Community

February 08, 2010

By submitted

HI Bicycle Enthusiasts, Principals, Physical Education Teachers, Health Councils, Law Enforcement, Kids program Directors, and Citizens,

Do we have some folks that would like to learn to teach children and/or adults bicycle safety education classes? Taos is being given the opportunity to provide a comprehensive Bike Education program ongoing in Taos.

The Bicycle Coalition of New Mexico has a bike educator, Tammy Schurr. She is traveling the state with the goal of increasing the number of bicycle safety education classes being offered in communities. She has Taos scheduled for April 26 - 30, 2010, participation and funding pending.

These are some choices for you to consider:

1. Youth Certified Instructors - To teach youth and host Kids Bike Events; a 3 hour course. Tammy would require that the newly trained Youth Instructors assists with at least one Kids Bike Event to solidify their new skills towards offering more Kids Bike Events in Taos.

2. Traffic Skills 101 - Gives cyclists the confidence they need to ride safely and legally in traffic or on the trail. The course covers bicycle safety checks, fixing a flat, on-bike skills and crash avoidance techniques and includes a student manual. Recommended for adults and children above age fourteen, this fast-paced, nine-hour course prepares cyclists for a full understanding of vehicular cycling. Prerequisite for LCI Seminar.

3. League Certified Instructor - To teach youth and adults. Successful graduates might want to consider taking the LCI Seminar that will be offered during the National Bike Rally hosted the first week of June 2010 in Albuquerque. Having our own LCIs in Taos would offer us flexibility in training more Youth Instructors and providing a comprehensive Bike Education Program.

Please contact me right away if any of the above certifications interest you. Tammy is facing a deadline to order class materials, so please let me know as soon as you can.

I look forward to talking with you soon,
